Dealing with a minor injury or illness can be stressful, but getting the treatment you need should never be a pain. Understanding what happens during an urgent care visit can help ease any anxiety and make the process go more smoothly. Here’s a comprehensive guide that explains what to expect at urgent care.

4 Things to Know Before You Visit

Before heading to an urgent care clinic (especially if it’s your first time), there are a few things you should know that will help ensure a seamless experience.

1: The Clinic’s Operating Hours

Urgent care clinics are typically not open 24/7 like emergency rooms. Make sure to check the clinic’s hours before you arrive. At Total Point Urgent Care, our walk-in clinics are open Monday through Saturday from 7am to 7pm.

2: Their Accepted Forms of Insurance

Check if your insurance plan is accepted to avoid unexpected costs. At our clinics, we offer discounted rates for uninsured patients. We also offer unlimited office visits when you sign up for our Total Point Wellness Membership

3. Which Documents You’ll Need

Bring a valid form of ID, your insurance card, and a list of medications you are currently taking.

4: No Appointment Is Necessary

At most urgent care clinics, you can just walk right in. No appointment or primary care referral is necessary to receive immediate care.

What to Expect from Your First Urgent Care Visit

During Check-in

Upon arrival at the urgent care clinic, you’ll need to check in at the front desk. You can expect to complete paperwork detailing your medical history, current symptoms, and personal information. You will also need to provide your insurance card for verification. If you don’t have insurance, don’t hesitate to ask about the cost of the visit and available payment options.

In the Waiting Room

After checking in, you’ll likely spend some time in the waiting room. Urgent care clinics typically have much shorter wait times than the emergency room. In the ER, the duration of your wait depends on the number of patients and the severity of their conditions, but urgent care clinics operate on a first-come, first-served basis. However, you may experience longer wait times in the evening, on weekends, and on holidays, when clinics are the busiest.

During Your Visit

When it’s your turn, a medical professional will call you in for the actual visit. This process typically involves four steps:

1: Consultation

A healthcare provider will discuss your symptoms and their duration, your medical history, and any concerns you may have. Be honest and thorough—the more details you provide, the better the care you’ll receive.

2: Examination

A physical examination may be performed, depending on your symptoms.

3: Diagnostics

If needed, you may undergo diagnostic tests such as blood tests or x-rays.

4: Treatment

Based on their findings, the healthcare provider will propose a treatment plan. This may include medications, minor procedures (such as stitches), or referrals to specialists if more advanced care is needed. They will also give you instructions on how to manage your condition at home, and any signs that you might need further medical attention.

Never hesitate to ask questions about your condition, the proposed treatment plan, and any recommended tests. Understanding your own condition is a crucial part of getting healthy again.

Billing and Payment

Before leaving, you’ll return to the front desk to check out. If you have insurance, the clinic will process your claim. You may need to make a co-payment or pay a portion of the bill at this time. If you’re uninsured, you will be responsible for paying the total cost of the visit. That’s why at Total Point Urgent Care, we offer discounts to our uninsured patients.
